Anora - Goodbye America

Anora - Goodbye America

Anora, a stripper in Brooklyn, is asked by her boss to entertain Vanya, a high-profile Russian client. Vanya repeatedly invites Anora to his place for sexual encounters and eventually offers her a substantial sum to be his girlfriend for a week. Anora agrees and takes a week off from work to spend with him. During their time together, Vanya reveals that he has to return to Russia for his father's business and jokingly remarks that marrying an American girl is the only way he can stay in America. He then proposes to Anora, and she accepts. They elope to Texas and get married. Following their marriage, Anora resigns from her job and moves into Vanya's mansion.

When Vanya's parents learn of his marriage to a stripper, they send Toros to investigate. Toros' men attempt to enter Vanya's mansion, and although Vanya tries to stop them, they are successful. After being shown the marriage license, Vanya is put on a call with Toros. Upon learning that Toros and his parents are coming to get him, Vanya immediately flees, leaving Anora confused as she believes he has informed his parents about the marriage.

Anora confronts Toros' men and ends up being handcuffed. Toros explains that everything Vanya owns, including the mansion and her wedding ring, belongs to his family. He asks for Anora's help in finding Vanya, and she agrees. They search from club to club but can't find him until Anora learns from a former coworker that Vanya is at her old strip club. They go there and take him, drunk, into their custody.

The next morning, they go to the courthouse to annul the marriage but are told they can't do it in New York because they were married in Texas. At the airport, they are greeted by Vanya's parents. Vanya's mother dismisses Anora, believing she is only after money. Anora initially wants to file for divorce to split Vanya's fortune, as they haven't signed a prenuptial agreement, but she is threatened by Vanya's mother. Realizing that Vanya won't defend or support her, she agrees to the annulment.

Anora is allowed to return to the mansion to collect her belongings but has to leave the next morning. That night, she drinks with Toros' man, and Toros returns her wedding ring, which he had secretly kept. Anora has a mental breakdown, realizing that Vanya is not the man she thought he was.

He is a coward who consistently chooses to run away from his problems and his partner instead of facing them head-on. He prefers to live life on his own terms and finds solace in parties. Although he lives a lavish lifestyle, he owns very little and most of his belongings are tied to his parents. He is still a “mama’s boy” and is unable to stand up to his parents. Any parental involvement would cause him to run away instead of confronting the situation, which shows that he has no bargaining power. He gives up and gives in to his parents' demands when they pressure him.
